As the year draws to a close, we are thrilled to present the inaugural edition of the SMR Architects newsletter. We are extending warm holiday wishes to everyone who has been a part of our journey this year. This season provides a moment for reflection and appreciation, and we want to express our thanks to our clients, partners, and collaborators who have played a pivotal role in making 2023 a year of success and growth for SMR Architects. Your support has fuelled our passion for innovative design and sustainable architecture.

Together, we have embarked on some remarkable ventures, creating spaces that inspire and add value. We’ll be taking a closer look at some of these transformative projects in this newsletter, each a testament to the collaborative spirit that defines SMR Architects. So, as we celebrate the festive season, let’s also celebrate the shared triumphs and some exciting opportunities that await us in the coming year.

This year, we expanded our footprint with the opening of our new office in the heart of Manchester at 111 Piccadilly. Complimenting our panoramic headquarters in Harrogate, this strategic move brings us closer to our client’s diverse projects in the Northwest. Now, we can connect with you not only in the picturesque setting of Harrogate but also in the bustling centre of Manchester, enhancing our ability to serve your needs more effectively.
In 2023, we have left our mark across various sectors, showcasing our versatility and commitment to delivering outstanding results.
This year, our Workspace Team completed the construction of eight Hybrid Commercial Units within a residential area, demonstrating our ability to deliver high-specification projects that seamlessly fit within

their context. Additionally, the successful completion of Safestore projects in Ellesmere Port and Eastleigh underscores our expertise in providing state-of-the-art self-storage solutions. Further to this, working for Aviva, with Ridge and Turleys we have successfully gained planning permission for seven industrial units in near Eccles, Greater Manchester.

In 2023, we spearheaded the development of a cutting-edge Architectural Design Standard and Specification for an internationally recognised Logistic Company UK logistics buildings. Utilising the latest technologies, including VR modelling and Building Information Modelling (BIM), we ensured that their new standards not only met but surpassed industry expectations.
The Ecommerce Team have been involved in approximately 400 ecommerce feasibilities across the UK this year, which speaks volumes about our dedication to providing the best solutions for our clients. Noteworthy is the planning submission for a split-level parking deck in collaboration with Blue Current Capital, a project that envisions over 400 parking spaces. In 2023, we delivered purpose-built ecommerce logistics facilities in Aylesford and Portsmouth, further solidifying our presence in this dynamic sector.
As one of Waitrose and Partners Framework Architects, our Retail Team have completed several stores fit-outs and refreshes this year, including those in Lichfield and Willerby, showcasing our proficiency in enhancing retail spaces. Furthermore, the approval of a new retail park scheme in Sunderland, is a testament to our forward-thinking approach.

Once approved, these projects will collectively contribute over two million square feet of new Industrial & Logistics space. This achievement underscores our ability to work collaboratively to navigate regulatory challenges and deliver projects of scale and significance.
Our I & L Team can also boast about the completion of three fit-out schemes across the UK and Ireland, helping them create a foothold in the UK contract logistics market, and part of a wider expansion plan, watch this space!
The Residential Team achieved a significant milestone with the submission of approximately 500 single-family dwellings across multiple sites. Planning approval for schemes in Pannal, currently under construction, and on Victoria Avenue in Harrogate, set to commence in 2024, demonstrates our commitment to creating vibrant living spaces in our community.

Community Impact:
We believe in giving back. This year, we planted over 1000 trees for Make It Wild, contributing to environmental preservation.
Our commitment to community welfare extended to fundraising for the Harrogate Homeless Project, participation in the McMillan Coffee morning, and ongoing support for St Michael’s Hospice.
As 2023 closes, we thank our team, clients, and community for being part of SMR Architects’ journey. We look forward to another year of pushing boundaries, creating innovative designs, and making a positive impact.

Team Appreciation:
Our success is not just about buildings but the people behind them. This year, team members achieved CIAT and Part III completions, showcasing their commitment to professional development. We had several promotions within the practice as a recognition of our commitment to rewarding excellence.
Beyond the office, our camaraderie grew through activities like lunch clubs, Tough Mudder training, monthly film nights, and Wellness Wednesday events.SMR has dedicated 45 hours per staff member this year on wellbeing activities! This means collectively over our monthly events we have spent approximately 2,400 hours team building!

In 2023, SMR Architects reached significant milestones, showcasing our commitment to excellence and continuous improvement. Marking our 9th birthday on December 14th, we reflect on the journey that has shaped SMR Architects.

SMR won UKReiif 2023 Architect of the Year and were shortlisted for the Insider Yorkshire Architect of the Year award. We also secured key accreditations – CHAS, APS, ISO:9001, and ISO:14001, reflecting our dedication to high standards in health and safety, project management, and environmental responsibility.

Major Developments Unveiled:
We are thrilled to announce that a major online retail industry leader has recently commenced a groundbreaking £140M, 2M sqft Industrial and Logistics (I&L) development in Hull. SMR Architects played a pivotal role in the planning and tender phases and is now appointed for the enabling and construction works. Anticipated to extend until April 2025, our involvement encompasses Lead Designer, BIM Manager, CDM, and Building Regulations Principal Designer services. Collaborating with industry-leading consultants such as Gleeds, Arcadis, BuroHappold, Hoarlea, First Plan, SLR, and FPCR, SMR is dedicated to delivering excellence in every aspect of this ambitious project. Stay tuned for the imminent announcement of the appointed Contractor.

A full detailed planning application has been submitted for a highly sustainable new campus facility in Warwickshire. Collaborating with Grimshaw for Frasers Group, the development will provide a world class facility including a new Headquarters building, learning & development facilities, and over 2.5M sqft of new logistics space. This provides a step change in quality of logistics building design bringing inspiration from galleries and museums in the proposed material palette.
Forge of Partnerships:
In the coming year, SMR Architects is set to strengthen its ties with Safestore Self-storage, as we embark on multiple projects across the UK. This collaboration promises to bring innovation and efficiency to the self-storage landscape, further enhancing our diverse portfolio.
Residential Marvels on the Horizon:
Our commitment to architectural excellence extends to residential projects, with several set to commence in the upcoming year. These projects, due to start on-site, are scheduled for completion in 2024.
