New Store Development
SMR Architects were appointed by Lidl to provide architectural services for a new store in Castle Irwell, Salford, aimed at regenerating a previously under-utilised site. Formerly a racecourse and later a student village, the site has been cleared and is now being redeveloped into a residential neighbourhood with public spaces and amenities.
The proposal comprises a bespoke 1,900 sqm Lidl store, featuring 100 customer parking spaces and enhanced landscaping. The design is contemporary yet contextually sensitive, with a single-height glazed entrance and a fully glazed south elevation facing Cromwell Road. Red brick detailing has been incorporated to reflect the surrounding architecture and reference the historic racecourse wall, which is retained at a lower level.
The development has been carefully designed to respect the amenities of nearby residents while contributing positively to the local urban fabric.
