Beck Retail Park Retail renovation project

Working under a Traditional contract, SMR worked with the full design team; 21|10 Consult, Gleeds, Fairhurst, iTS Consulting & McLaren Property to fulfil the landlord’s brief to give a new ‘lease of life’ to a previously tired Retail site.

The reconfiguration and refurbishment works have rejuvenated the site, resulting in a fresh and contemporary feel; facilitated through modern Rainscreen cladding, new glazed main entrance features, reroofing/roof repairs to all units, and a re-design of the entire car parking area and service yard arrangement. The Units now total; 115,000 sq.ft of retail floorspace; creating added value for the Client’s existing Retail Park tenants, which includes; B&M, Matalan & Home Bargains.

As with many refurbishment projects, there were a number of site specific constraints to workaround, such as a live National Rail line close to the rear of the site and some units remaining open and trading during the renovation.

The 42 weeks, phased construction work was undertaken by NU Construction Ltd, giving SMR their first opportunity to work with this experienced contractor. The scheme received positive feedback from all stakeholders during the construction phase and from end users as the spaces were formally handed over.

The scheme has been recognised by BUILD Architecture Awards 2017: Best Retail Refurbishment Project. These Awards endeavour to recognise the amazing work completed by designers and visionaries.
