July 2016

On our busy run up to Summer, SMR Architects has once again enjoyed coaching two potential architects of the future through intensive work experience placements. With one candidates placement lasting 1 week and the other 2 weeks, the student faced different challenges. Both students commenced their time interrogating for their ‘dream home’ ideas this included; initially fleshing out the brief, sketching layouts, detailing the scheme using BIM Software and finally creating 3D visualisations, and presenting the scheme to our Principal Architect.

We are now seeing a strong themes to these dream homes, with a strong need to accommodate; games room, cinema room, swimming pool with slide, an oversized garage to accommodate ‘super’ cars and a heli-pad!

SMR regularly accepts school requests for Work Experience and believes that being a proactive, centrally based practice its important we support to our community. This is the first time we’ve shown the Students BIM: Revit software and we’re delighted with how much they’ve managed to squeeze into their time. Each student has spent time with our BIM Manager, benefiting from an introductory lesson in Autodesk Revit. Followed by everyone from Team SMR enthusiastically being involved in the process, and passing on their own personal passions and skills to the youngsters.

An other first, has been a separate a Masterplan Challenge, discussing the principles of larger schemes and them to have a go at Master-planning a local site. This challenge has allowed us to see what young people would like to see within larger developments for the future.

Our latest student clearly enjoyed himself.  Mitchell of Harrogate Grammar School said

Jane Hinkins, Personal Development Co-ordinator of Harrogate Grammar School said

“Work experience provides a valuable insight for young people in the world of work.  At SMR students are provided with a very well planned programme giving a range of experience.  We are really grateful to the companies that give this opportunity”

Following the theme of further encouraging young people to become involved within our industry, SMR are looking forward to supporting both the Harrogate Grammar School and Leeds Beckett’s University career fairs later this year.
