This commission was won via a competition with two other regional practices.  The project brief was to relocate the Client’s business from their existing Harrogate town centre site to the sensitive and jealously guarded natural setting of Crimple Valley, Harrogate.

One of the primary challenges of this project was to deliver a 30,000 sqft modern, hi-tech head office building, within a rural fringe landscape setting for the Homeowners Friendly Society (OneFamily). In addition, the building occupies a prominent position overlooking valley, which can be seen from the Crimple Valley Viaduct, when approaching Harrogate by train.  Consequently, orientation, scheme design and planning needed to be handled with great care. The design principles were to reflect the solidarity of the Financial Services client, whilst sitting comfortably within its natural surroundings.  High quality materials were utilised, including natural stone and slate.

The primary office space was organised around a double height atrium to make most of natural light. The building was the first in the UK to utilise a combination of passive ventilation and a mechanical ‘chilled beam ceiling’.

The building was awarded the Harrogate Design Award.
