Waitrose’s second ‘dark’ store. But the first purpose built Dotcom Fulfilment Centre (DFC) for the retailer, based on a six acre site features an 80,000 sq ft picking space.

The depot provides employment for approx 500 people when fully operational, doubling the number of online grocery orders Waitrose.com can fulfil within the capital. The facility  incorporates 10,000 sq ft of internal freezer and ambient cooling, internal food preparation area including bakery and high performance cooling system. With a range of picking methods, including chilled chambers and allows for future automation. Partner facilities follow the very latest Waitrose standards, providing a fantastic place to work.

The developer, Evander Properties, employed Michael Sparks Associates for the shell architectural works, and Winvic Construction services for both shell and fit-out works, dealing with difficult site conditions within the quarry basin and complex service connections. SMR undertook the fit-out works with Winvic and Waitrose. The overall project was delivered on time, and on budget – the completed scheme is a great example of a combined team working well together.

The building was awarded the 2014 IAS Deal of the Year award.
