Located on the banks of Lake Windermere, in the bustling Lake District village of Ambleside, this extension proposal to a John Lewis Partnership Hotel includes 29 bedrooms, a 120 m² conference facility and a Spa, as well as an undercroft extension to the existing car parking facility.

The architectural solution is derived from the context of the site, and the surrounding area. It timelessly embodies the spirit of the place, its Genius Loci.

The region is blessed with outstanding geography and the Lake District provides a rich palette of natural materials. The stone cladding is extracted with the use of diamond wire, which avoids the use of blasting, creating less damage and intrusion on the environment.

The design is unique and appropriate to the context; the material treatment reinforces the sense of place, and strengthens the relationship between the building and the space beyond.
