Darfield Final 1 copy4 March 2015

SMR Architects have recently assisted in gaining outline planning approval for the Masterplan of the development of the former Foulstone School site in the heart of Darfield. Acting on behalf of Peveril Securities and Rothstone Ltd, the plans for the 6-acre site include up to 35 new dwellings, a new 36,700sqft retail terrace, a new pedestrian link to the park and wider area, and additional landscaped public open spaces and car parking. The retail component is gaining strong interest with terms already agreed with a number of retailers including frozen food specialist Heron Foods, Greggs and Subway.

Ralph Jones, Managing Director of Peveril Securities said

“This scheme will provide a much needed boost to local retail facilities as well as a significant number of job opportunities.  During the consultation process, many residents told us that there wasn’t enough choice in the area, so they had to travel out of village too carry out most of their shopping.  This development will solve that issue, providing convenient access to a range of shops all targeted at meeting the needs of the local community.

We are in advanced discussions with a discount retailer regarding the anchor store so hope to be in a position to finalise that deal over the next few weeks.  We are also close to exchanging contracts on a freehold sale of the residential element, which is likely to offer a mix of tenures including much needed affordable housing.”

The redevelopment of this site utilises previously developed land which, following the demolition of the school, has been left vacant and overgrown for several years.  The site offers an opportunity to infill a major part of Darfield’s long struggling village centre to create a distinctive high quality mixed-use area of retail and residential uses. Importantly, it creates a sustainable hub for Darfield’s 8,000 population.

The plans were unanimously approved by Barnsley Council at Committee on February 18th.  The designs were positively received by Committee members with several comments during the debate on the high quality of the design and presentation.   Please revisit our website for future updates on this exciting new development in the heart of Darfield.
