Our practice originally formed in 1968 (Hind Woodhouse Partnership), under the stewardship of Gordon Woodhouse. At that time, our core business was commercial architecture. Over a 20 years period the practice undertook numerous projects within this field, such as; Office refurbishments in Mayfair, new build offices for Ideal Homes, Industrial units for AC Cars, B1 office developments at Wood Lane London, B8 industrial /distribution developments for Modo Paper and Master Planning at Sundon Springs.

In 1985, the practice gained its first opportunity, in what would become a very fruitful relationship, for Tesco Stores Ltd. This first project on behalf of Trafalgar House Developments’ was the Tesco store in New Malden, where we were responsible for the overall site development. This opportunity was closely followed by a major extension to Tesco’s distribution centre at Brooklands, Weybridge.

During the 1990’s recession, Chris Smalley and Smith took responsibility for running the practice and rebranded as HMP Architects. In April 1991 the decision was taken to incorporate as Smith Smalley Architects Limited (SSA Architects).

SSA formed a close working relationship with the rapidly growing retailer, Tesco Stores Ltd, who appreciated SSA’s pragmatic and proactive style, the relationship led to the practice developing two very successful work streams; Distribution Centres and Food Retail Stores.

In 2001, Smith Smalley successfully become a key member of Tesco’s new Centre of Excellence for Consultants. Over a 25 year period SSA designed and developed 8M sq.ft of Retail space and 5M sq.ft of Distribution space throughout the UK and Eire, and acted as consultants to Tesco Europe on distribution depots in Hungary and Czechoslovakia and further depots in Thailand and Korea amongst others.
