Smalley Marsey Rispin Architects is proud to be associated with the Tesco Rotherham scheme shortlisted as ‘Project of the Year’ in the Constructing Excellence in Yorkshire & Humber Awards 2015 (#CEYHawards).

TCN Developments procured and redeveloped the former council site, providing a new modern retail facility in the heart of the town. However, this project was more than just a new Tesco Extra store; in addition to generating new jobs and guaranteeing roles for all existing staff who relocated from the former site, it also successfully supported Rotherham’s renaissance, as the town has transformed at pace through significant investment in road infrastructure and public spaces, resulting a major shopping and business destination.

The brief was to provide a high-quality store which integrates with the surrounding built environment and enhances the character of the area and acts as a ‘gateway’ location to the primary shopping zone. Material choices, complex detailing and an attention to detail throughout the design and construction phase helped deliver the vision. Architecturally, the building boasts striking features and through community engagement local history is recognised within artistic ‘fret work’.

The project attained a ‘Very Good’ BREEAM environmental rating, leaving a strong sustainable legacy with minimal environmental impact and a good basis for future environmental performance. The design and construction teams adopted a collaborative approach to the project programme, health and safety and engagement of the community, all leading to project success and industry accolades.

Submitted by ISG, main contractor for shell & core and subsequent fit-out works, the awards ceremony is a prestigious black tie event at York’s National Railway Museum. ISG is an international construction services company delivering fit out, construction, engineering services and a range of specialist solutions. As a retail focused practice, SMR Architects has synergy with ISG, and have worked collaboratively with them on a number of projects.

SMR Architects Celebrates Living Wage Commitment

SMR Architects is pleased to announce that The Living Wage Foundation has accredited our practice as a Living Wage employer.

The Living Wage commitment will see everyone working at SMR Architects, regardless of whether they are permanent employees or sub consultants; receive a minimum hourly wage of £7.85 – significantly higher than the national minimum wage of £6.50.

The Living Wage is an hourly rate set independently and updated annually. The Living Wage is calculated according to the basic cost of living using the ‘Minimum Income Standard’ for the UK. Decisions about what to include in this standard are set by the public; it is a social consensus about what people need to make ends meet. The Living Wage enjoys cross party support, with public backing from the Prime Minister and the Leaders of the Opposition parties.
